Three police officers lost their lives and at least 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters entered the property in the vicinity of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and another man who escaped after the explosion was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area showed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the residence was under an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents triggered the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He believed the detonation had occurred on a story above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
