Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.

The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the prospects of the company, and anticipate tracking their development".

The prominent academic, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The recently released communications revealed that the economist communicated with the financier until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it respected the economist's choice to resign.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Congressional Action

This development arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch voted on recently to endorse a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on Epstein.

The measure will subsequently move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has said he intends to endorse the measure, after reversing his stance on the matter following pushback from his followers.

A group of Epstein-related emails released by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The communications showed that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to link Summers to influential global figures.

After the messages were released with the public, he expressed he accepted "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to restore trust and repair bonds with the persons nearest to me".

The professor held senior posts under Democratic administrations; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public duties recently on Monday, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, verified that he was not affiliated with the organization.

Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
