A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the footage.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images were from was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
