Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the team's ten-game without a victory start to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the options to be considered by the club ownership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would pose a potential hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the ex- Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the Wolves board as they begin the search of appointing a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise candidate, even though he would be a shock appointment given he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United player is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not need to pay any compensation.
