An esteemed Russian general has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The attack occurred on Monday morning when an bomb concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Investigators stated that one line of inquiry points to the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has not issued a comment.
Location of the Attack
Personnel have been dispatched to the location, which is reportedly in a southerly district of the capital.
Accounts suggest the explosion happened in a car park close to a residential building.
History of Incidents
Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.
This latest event echoes other serious incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a explosive placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source earlier connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.
Hostilities has increasingly seen clandestine operations extending into the streets of the Russian capital.
The examination into General Sarvarov's death continues to be active.
