Europe's premier competition remains Chelsea's elusive trophy. They desire it deeply. However, their title hopes took a hit in the Netherlands, a stalemate against Twente not at all the ideal start to a tournament they hope to dominate.

Despite their dominance of the ball, the home side that struck first, via skipper Danique van Ginkel, before Sandy Baltimore scored from the spot for the equaliser.

Home Success Yet Continental Heartbreak

Each piece of silverware is precious, yet for the team which has consistently won it all, the longing for the final piece is powerful. However, the hosts created the top chance in the first period. A player found space after a neat one-two with a teammate, but instead of aiming for goal she passed for the team's leading striker who was denied by the defense.

Chelsea showed spirit but a lack of cohesion, the changes taking a toll, particularly in the final third. Maika Hamano ought to have scored with a chance but blasted high from the spot in a key moment, while the keeper helped keep Twente in it.

Second Half Action

After halftime, a recent addition found the net, slotting home a low cross, but the flag was raised, the passer having been in an illegal position.

The manager turned to the substitutes in an attempt to alter the dynamics soon after. Two players were replaced, including one with a head injury, for new energy and an ex- hosts' star.

Missed Chances

The home side created another golden chance to take the lead right around the 60-minute point. Having won possession in the Chelsea third, a driven pass reached a teammate at the far post yet a challenge denied the chance.

The hosts' chances were limited and with every missed without scoring, it seemed that Twente might pay the price. Yet, it was Chelsea regretting their wastefulness. A cutback reached the captain and she shifted to her strong foot and struck into the net.

Leveling Penalty

The Blues continued pressing. They have not delivered exciting displays this season yet they've secured results and away from home they continued that trend. A challenge on a player earned the away side a spot-kick, although they might have had one earlier when a late boot hit a teammate. Baltimore converted to tie the game.

A winner eluded them, yet they possess chances to bounce back against upcoming opponents ahead of meeting familiar foes and title winners.
