This historic hillside village, a ancient town in Andalucía, approximately 45 minutes’ drive from Granada, is the inspiring setting for this painting holiday. Painters of all abilities – including novices – will be taught how to conceive and execute modern art. Part of the schedule will be spent outdoors, working on structured activities en plein air. These initial sketches and paintings will then be expanded upon in the workspace, with attendees producing several interpretive scenes in acrylic paint to be exhibited in the local community. The group has exclusive access of the hotel, which is built around an central patio and has a roof terrace with panoramic vistas over the countryside. The fee covers five days’ art instruction; all meals; and an outing to the nearby fortress and other points of interest.

Plant-Based Cooking in the Algarve

This Mediterranean cooking retreat, based at a riverside villa in the central Portuguese region, is inspired by the plant-based cuisine of renowned chefs. Participants will master the art of selection of small dishes, take part in a falafel-making workshop, refine brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses like a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are trips to the local market and a nearby winery to taste local vintages, plus leisure time for strolls by the Funcho River, to unwind on the deck or take a dip in the pool. The farmhouse, a renovated rural property, has multiple rooms, as well as glamping tents in the grounds.

Maritime Singing Break in St Ives

This coastal town is the ideal setting for a maritime music retreat. Participants will be taught historic sailing songs from a experienced musician, and have a go at writing their own. The schedule includes voice exercises, breath control techniques, stagecraft advice and a closing performance. The holiday is based at a rural hotel with views of St Ives Bay. Full board are provided, such as a traditional tea on arrival, breakfast options, lunches to go and three-course dinners. Grog, unfortunately, is not provided. Creative Writing in Crete

Writer and tutor an experienced instructor runs the daily workshops on this authors' getaway. He explores topics including story structure, characters, locations and suspense, to sending manuscripts to agents. Greg’s wife, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in special sessions at the start and finish of the week. The retreat is based at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – ten private accommodations are set around a central garden with a pool (non-writing partners are welcome to share). On the final evening, aspiring writers mark the occasion with a musical performance in the courtyard and a farewell dinner.

Beginners' Apiculture in Mid Wales

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a host of programs on eco-living: from wildlife gardening to making pallet furniture. This two-day course will help attendees learn the fundamentals of apiary management, study the biology of bees and learn about their environmental benefits. It is designed to produce “bee-friendly beekeepers”. This course is also a chance to de-stress in the centre's carefully maintained woodlands, which are home to wildlife, otters, dormice, bats and rare birds. Bed and breakfast the night before is £80, and all meals and lodging during the course is 97 pounds.

Yachting for Novices in the Blackwater Estuary

These new weekend sailing courses are spent on Wayfarers and Dufours on the estuary in Essex. They are aimed at novice sailors starting out or more experienced mariners who want a skills update. Sailors can improve their steering, build their seamanship and work towards the Royal Yachting Association’s certification levels in a fun, welcoming environment. There are day-only and residential options, with accommodation in simple dorms in the waterside training centre. The day option provides packed lunches, while the residential package covers two nights' stay and full board, from hearty breakfasts to evening barbecues.
