The Gunners' Controversial Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Set to End This Coming Year

The North London club has declared that its disputed sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will come to an end in the coming June.

Background and Scrutiny

The partnership, reportedly valued at around ten million pounds each year, was initiated six years ago and has since been heavily criticized.

Such scrutiny arises from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 rebel group in ongoing conflicts in the eastern areas of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Months ago, Arsenal faced allegations of delivering an "outrageous" snub to the government of the DRC by failing to convene with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to talk about the deal.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda serves as an arm of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a government department.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal signed and continued this partnership chiefly to increase their African supporter base.

Nevertheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “mutually agreed” to end their collaboration.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the original goals of the partnership – promoting conservation and eco-friendly travel, inspiring millions of supporters to discover the country, and establishing a durable base for travel industry expansion,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The release further noted that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's objective to emerge as an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and host more global sporting events while implementing grassroots football initiatives that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches develop their skills and promote increased engagement in athletics nationwide.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, portrayed the arrangement as a “significant journey” and stated it had been “driving forward” the club's goals.

But that is not how a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the activist organization Gunners for Peace demonstrating outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against PSG in late April.

Demonstrators showed a placard declaring “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and distributed armbands to cover up the Rwanda branding on jerseys.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

Around that time, the French champions extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Simultaneously, Atlético Madrid signed a fresh deal for the same period that has resulted in the branding featured on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
