The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
