Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Ace Sets Aside His Ego Outside.

A single omission was enough. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to know that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, although it is equally up to the player to adapt to the tactical structures and player rankings required with England now that he is back in the manager's supportive environment.

The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it in the right way. Individual quality is important but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when stardom takes over. Still, a message has been sent.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after his omission of last month’s squad. He watched England secure their spot at the tournament without him. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel mention appreciating the squad's spirit and values. Inevitably, he has responded in champion style, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder focused on intimidating opponents instead of teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” the German stated. “Bellingham displays the edge. You need that kind of fire to reach the heights that he reached. Everyone must help him and build a setting which he can [have] that intensity against rivals and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”

The star took up much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s meaningless matches against Serbia and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? This is a further gifted playmaker who needs love and guidance. He has not played for England since March and has struggled to perform well this year but the boss could not ignore the player after his display in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund this week.

The question, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to include another youngster once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting Harry Kane’s influence as a result.

It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity helps. Bellingham is in as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who must play central. Tuchel wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea about him for years. I think it matches his abilities the most.”

Tuchel conceded there are times when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the environment, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to playing for his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. Believe he profits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? What are my to defend?

The manager discussed Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and the other netting goals from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Interest is high.

The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.

At the same time, it is additionally a chance to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham setting up Kane to net in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for England when the pair linked up for a score. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“At this point at some point it falls to the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of the player being on trial. He cannot even be assured to start versus the upcoming opponents. The manager wants him committed but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. It will make a very strong England team into an more effective one.
