The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
